What happened to Civitas.
A 2021 Wattenberg consolidation vehicle that grew into a multi-basin operator before merging into SM Energy in November 2025.
Civitas Resources was a U.S. independent oil and gas producer based in Denver, Colorado, with operations focused on the DJ Basin in Colorado and the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico. The company existed as an independent public entity from late 2021 through November 2025, at which point it merged into SM Energy.
Civitas itself was a consolidation vehicle. The company was formed in 2021 from a three-way merger of Bonanza Creek Energy, Extraction Oil & Gas, and Crestone Peak Resources, three Wattenberg Field operators that had each independently navigated the volatile DJ Basin landscape of the late 2010s. Civitas added Permian acreage in 2023 through the acquisitions of Tap Rock Resources and Hibernia Resources. The November 2025 merger with SM Energy closed the chapter on the Civitas brand, with the combined entity operating under the SM Energy name.

Mineral owners with division orders bearing any of the Civitas predecessor names (Bonanza Creek, Extraction, Crestone Peak, Tap Rock, Hibernia) or the Civitas name itself should expect to see those orders re-issued in the SM Energy name following the November 2025 close.
The Wattenberg Field has been one of the most consolidated U.S. oil and gas regions over the past decade, and many mineral owners hold interests in spacing units where the operator name has changed two or three times. The Colorado ECMC well search by API number confirms the current operator of record on each well. The legal description and decimal interest do not change through any of these mergers.
