If you receive royalty payments or have ever leased mineral rights, the operator's name shows up at the top of the division order. Here is a reference set of the operators most active across our 12-state footprint, including legacy names whose acquisitions you might still see on older paperwork.

A multinational integrated energy company with major U.S. onshore positions in the DJ Basin, the Permian, and following the 2025 close of the Hess acquisition, the Bakken.
ConocoPhillips
A publicly traded U.S. independent producer with major positions in the Eagle Ford, Bakken, Permian, and Anadarko basins, deepened by recent acquisitions of Marathon Oil and Concho Resources.
Devon Energy
A publicly traded U.S. independent producer with positions in the Permian Delaware, Williston Basin, Eagle Ford, Anadarko, and Powder River Basin, deepened by the WPX Energy and Grayson Mill acquisitions.
Diamondback Energy
A publicly traded Permian-focused producer headquartered in Midland, Texas. Following the 2024 Endeavor Energy Resources merger, Diamondback holds among the largest pure-play Permian Basin positions in the country.
EOG Resources
A publicly traded U.S. independent producer with leading positions in the Eagle Ford, Permian Delaware, Powder River Basin, Bakken, and Utica.
EQT Corporation
A publicly traded natural gas producer headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. EQT is among the largest U.S. natural gas producers, focused entirely on the Marcellus and Utica plays in Appalachia.
Expand Energy
Formed in October 2024 from the merger of Chesapeake Energy and Southwestern Energy, Expand is among the largest natural gas producers in the United States with major positions in the Haynesville and Marcellus.
ExxonMobil
Among the largest energy companies in the world, ExxonMobil's U.S. onshore production runs through XTO Energy and now includes the former Pioneer Natural Resources position in the Permian Basin.
Occidental Petroleum
A publicly traded U.S. independent producer with one of the largest Permian Basin positions in the country, plus DJ Basin, Anadarko, and Hugoton acreage carried over from the Anadarko Petroleum acquisition.
SM Energy
A publicly traded U.S. independent producer with positions in the Midland Basin, South Texas/Eagle Ford, and Uinta Basin, recently expanded by the November 2025 merger with Civitas Resources to add a major DJ Basin position.

A privately held independent oil and gas operator and the largest oil producer in the state of Wyoming. Anschutz is the dominant operator of the modern Powder River Basin oil play.
Continental Resources
A privately held independent oil and gas producer headquartered in Oklahoma City. Continental is a leading operator in the Bakken, Anadarko, and Powder River Basin, and one of the largest privately held U.S. producers.

If your division order or royalty statement was issued years ago, it might still bear an operator name that has since been acquired or merged. Each of these legacy pages explains where the entity is now and what to verify.
Anadarko Petroleum
A multi-basin U.S. independent producer that was a dominant operator in the DJ Basin Wattenberg Field, the Permian, and the Powder River Basin before its 2019 acquisition by Occidental. The Anadarko name remains on countless division orders.
Civitas Resources
A DJ Basin and Permian Basin operator formed in 2021 from the consolidation of Bonanza Creek Energy, Extraction Oil & Gas, and Crestone Peak Resources. Civitas merged into SM Energy in November 2025.
Pioneer Natural Resources
A Midland-based independent producer that was the largest pure-play Permian Basin operator before its acquisition by ExxonMobil in May 2024. Mineral owners may still see the Pioneer name on older division orders.
